Energy Drinks: What’s the harm?

Energy Drinks: What’s the harm?

The Magna Carta School, a local Surrey film maker and former student, Henry Lynch from Facio Films and Runnymede Borough Council have joined forces to create a hard hitting film aimed at raising awareness to young people about the dangers of high energy drinks which will be shown in local schools across Runnymede.

For the past decade, the increasing consumption of high energy drinks by teenagers has become a major health concern due to the amount of caffeine in them. A typical energy drink can contain 50-200mg of caffeine per 250ml serving.

The EU Food Information Regulation (Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011) requires specific labelling for high caffeine drinks and foods where caffeine has been added for a physiological effect. Drinks that contain caffeine from whatever source at a level over 150mg per litre (mg/l) must state: ‘High caffeine content. Not recommended for children or pregnant or breast-feeding women’.

The film features young people talking about the side effects they have experiences as a direct result of drinking high energy drinks. Young people who consume too much caffeine may suffer from the following short-term effects:

  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Headache
  • Difficulty falling asleep

Community Services Committee Chairman, Cllr Marisa Heath said: “We have funded this project through the Community First initiative as it is imperative that we highlight the dangers of high energy drinks. These drinks are often sold alongside regular soft drinks and therefore deemed as safe, however young people should check the label before purchasing and limit consumption as they can produce undesirable side effects.”

Jeanette Schofield who has co-ordinated this creative collaboration said: “It has been exciting to see local money, invested in local talent, using local young people to highlight what has become an increasing problem. We really hope this short film will be shown in all schools in Surrey to help raise awareness of the dangers of drinking high energy drinks.”
